SMT Manufacturing Engineer

Department: Pcb Assembly
Location: Waltham, MA

Nova Biomedical is hiring an SMT Manufacturing Engineer on-site in our Waltham, MA facility to provide technical engineering support to Nova Biomedical's manufacturing printed circuit boards utilizing surface mount technology (SMT) and through-hole technology (TH). Program, validate, and maintain in house SMT equipment and continually improve board assembly processes. More specific responsibilities will include:

  • Providing technical manufacturing support to maintain a reliable supply of printed circuit board assemblies for the timely delivery of Nova products.
  • Using analytical and problem-solving capability to develop and standardize the SMT and TH processes.
  • Identifying and implementing preventive and corrective measures to continuously improve in house production of quality printed circuit board assemblies.
  • Creating, optimizing, and maintaining the SMT programs for the Pick & Place Machines, Soldering Paste Printers, Automatic Optical Inspection Machine, Automatic Solder Paste Inspection Machine, and Reflow Ovens.
  • Continuously reviewing and assessing the SMT Printed Circuit Assembly (PCA) production systems for improvements in efficiency, throughput, and quality.
  • Utilizing and applying SMT machine performance criteria; this could include component attrition, nozzle data, feeder data and vision error information and use this information to drive improvements within the machine performance.
  • Reviewing PCB designs for Design for Manufacturability (DFM) to ensure compatibility with Bare Board house and Board Assembly house production requirements.
  • Troubleshooting and dispositioning of non-conforming materials related to board assembly production.
  • Providing analysis and resolutions to Corrective and Preventative Action (CAPA) for board assembly issues.
  • Providing guidance and mentoring to enhance the skill level of SMT Operators and Technicians. Examples are machine set-up and operation, machine maintenance and repair, material storage and handling, ESD protection and soldering techniques.
  • Ensuring the SMT production equipment is maintained/calibrated properly: Developing a maintenance program and manage compliance.
  • Documenting workflow routings and process times for Nova's Printed Circuit Assemblies, and interface with Production management and Planning on SAP capacity planning.
  • Providing reports on spares usage during Maintenance periods or machine breakdowns to maintain spare-pan stock levels and to highlight areas of concern or areas för machine improvement.
  • Diagnosing and repairing all departmental equipment down to PCB level and report findings in a concise and accurate manner.
  • Writing and performomg Process Validation Protocols, Equipment Installation Qualifications (IQs) and Operation Qualifications (OQs).
  • Developing, maintaining and reviewing SMT Manufacturing related documents and procedures (e.g. Assembly Procedures, History files.
  • Producing R&D prototype jobs on the production equipment with the assistance of production personnel.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics) degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years SMT manufacturing engineering experience.
  • Hands-on SMT engineering experience a plus.
  • Must be proficient with computer/networking and general software such as MS Office.
  • Experience with SAP, PARMI, BTU, KIC Profiler, Ekra/ASYS equipment and Visual Cam is a
  • plus.
  • A good understanding of electrical drawings, schematics and engineering drawings as well as experience in the general use of multimeters, hand power tools and measuring equipment.
  • Physical Requirements: (The following physical demands are required to perform this job but not on a regular basis)
    • Alternating between standing and sitting

    • Crouching/stooping, kneeling, walking Lifting/Carrying up to 50 lbs.

    • Repetitive task performance: repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers
    • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods
    • Using foot controls and hands to handle, control, or feel objects
    • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
