About the role

The Scientific Fellow is the principal technical expert in sensor technologies. The Fellow will lead fundamental research, design, and optimization efforts for next-generation ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) aimed at detecting critical electrolytes in whole blood. The Fellow also will collaborate closely with commercial and R&D leadership to shape the scientific strategy and roadmap and will address the industry’s most challenging issues - including sensor durability, miniaturization, and interference within complex biological environments - to foster innovation, elevate quality, and better serve the needs of customers and patients.

If you’re passionate about advanced research and want to be part of a team that is shaping the future of life sciences, we’d love to hear from you, apply today!

What you’ll do

  • Advanced Sensor Architecture & Design
    • Spearhead the conceptualization and development of ion-selective electrodes and reference sensors tailored for biological samples.
    • Create innovative polymeric membrane formulations to enhance selectivity and minimize biofouling in whole blood applications.
    • Engineer and model sensor geometries to accelerate response times and reduce required sample volumes, including integration with microfluidic systems.
  • Surface Chemistry & Material Science
    • Develop stable transduction layers to minimize potential drift and failures.
    • Direct the selection and synthesis of ionophores and lipophilic salts to achieve reliable Nernstian responses.
    • Investigate and mitigate the impact of interfering species (e.g., lipids, proteins, drug metabolites) on sensor accuracy and precision.
  • Characterization & Validation
    • Establish comprehensive testing protocols utilizing electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry, and chronopotentiometry.
    • Interpret complex datasets to link sensor performance with manufacturing variables through statistical process control (SPC).
    • Troubleshoot sensor issues - including signal drift, excessive noise, or membrane delamination – identify root causes and develop effective mitigations/solutions to prevent recurrence.
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship
    • Serve as the internal Subject Matter Expert (SME) in electrochemistry and physical chemistry.
    • Mentor Senior Scientists and Engineers, promoting a culture of scientific rigor and first-principles thinking.
    • Lead the intellectual property strategy by identifying patentable innovations and preparing technical disclosures.

What we are looking for in you

  • Membrane Chemistry: Extensive expertise in the use of PVC, polyurethane, and silicone-based matrices for ion sensing applications.
  • Fabrication: Proven experience with planar sensor fabrication and/or thick-film screen printing, advanced dispensing technologies, and wafer-level processing methods.
  • Data Analysis: Advanced proficiency in Excel, Python, MATLAB, or JMP for modeling electrochemical systems and visualizing complex datasets.
  • Regulatory: Familiarity with design controls under ISO 13485 and FDA QSR 21 CFR Part 820.
  • Thought Leadership: Demonstrated contributions to intellectual property development and active participation in scientific conferences representing the company.
  • 15+ years of industrial experience in the development of IVD (In Vitro Diagnostic) medical devices, particularly electrochemical sensors.
  • Proven success in launching electrochemical sensor products to the commercial market.
  • In-depth understanding of the Nernst Equation and its practical variations in high-ionic-strength physiological environments.
  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, or Biomedical Engineering is required.

Physical Requirements for this role include:

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolong periods in a laboratory or office setting.
  • Manual dexterity to handle laboratory instruments, small components, or computer equipment.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to wear PPE (gloves, lab coat, safety glasses, masks etc.) as required
  • Work Environment: Exposure to chemicals/biological materials and medical devices in a laboratory setting under controlled safety protocols
  • The full list of physical requirements for this role is available upon request.
