Sr. Environmentalist Heath & Safety Specialist

Department: Environmental Hlth&Safety
Location: Waltham, MA

Nova Biomedical is hiring a Sr. Environmental Health & Safety Specialist. This position is M-F on-site in Waltham Ma and sometimes requires travel to other Nova Biomedical locations in Billerica Ma.

Job Summary:

  • Ensure Nova is a safe work environment for all employees through implementation of policies, trainings, procedures and culture of all Nova Waltham/Billerica facilities.
  • Continuous improvement of an effective Environmental, Health and Safety program.
  • Interact with the various local, state and federal agencies such as MWRA, OSHA, DEP, EPA, Insurance carriers, Local Fire/Police, and many others for permitting and inspection requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with all environmental and health regulations, as well as keeping abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that potentially impact the organization.
  • Coordinate all aspects of resource use, pollution reduction, waste management, environmental health, and risk assessment and employee involvement.
  • Be responsible for identifying and remediating hazardous workplace conditions in Waltham and Billerica facilities.
  • Develop a strong working knowledge of standard concepts, practices and procedures within the organization.
  • Chair the Safety Committee each month and coordinate with members to complete action items.
  • Oversee the activities and projects of subordinates.
  • Review overall EH&S effectiveness and map out continuing strategy to meet the current needs as well as future needs.
  • Lead and direct efforts of managers and employees on various safety initiatives at Nova.
  • Train employees on company policies and regulations pertaining to employee safety in conjunction with Human Resources such as Blood Borne Pathogens, HazCom, Chemical Hygiene, LOTO, etc.

Responsibilities include:

  • Continual permitting and reporting requirements including
    • TUR lead reporting.
    • Storm water discharge permit.
    • Hazardous waste designation and registration.
    • Air permitting.
    • MWRA permit for wastewater discharge.
    • Category 4 Fire Permit.
  • Coordinate the organization and training of both the spill team and medical response liaisons.
  • Analyze and new process to ensure that employee and environmental safety is addressed, and if necessary, amend the process.
  • Conduct regular safety walks and follow up meetings for manufacturing and R&D areas.
  • Manage numerous waste streams in the various buildings to ensure safe and proper disposal of waste through licensed contractors.
  • Coordination of outside safety services for fire extinguishers, prescription safety glasses and shoes.
  • Create and maintain listings of approved PPE items and suppliers to assure safety and cost control.
  • Improve energy consumption practices to reduce costs and lessen the company's environmental impact.
  • Annual fit testing of all employees required to use respirators at any point of the manufacturing process or during spill cleanup to ensure the inhalation of dangerous chemicals is not occurring.
  • Coordinate and schedule waste pickups with licensed services on a monthly basis.
  • Prepare, revise, update and perform environmental health and safety training in the areas of:
    • Bloodborne Pathogens

    • Hazard Communication

    • Chemical Hygiene

    • PPE use and maintenance

    • GHS labeling

    • Other occupational/environmental safety related topics.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of health and safety functions within a manufacturing environment and the federal and state regulations pertaining to such a facility.
  • Environmental or OSHA related training such as HAZWOPER, GHS, etc. is desired.
  • Certification for Wastewater Management/Operator desired.

Skills/ Competencies:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to quickly identify and remediate safety and environmental deficiencies in the workplace.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Education:

  • B.S. degree or higher in Safety & Occupational Health Applied Sciences or related discipline.

Experience:

  • 5 plus years of experience in EH&S field.
